The 1st step is to develop your overall philosophy, then you would move on to offensive & defensive philosophy, and then its all about learning the fundamentals of the game such as effective team play, maximzing positions, setting screens, basic formations, and finally, choosing the right plays & drills.

Basketball plays are broken down into two broad categories, offense and defense. In offense, you have various types of formations to breakdown the defense. Each formation has advantages and disadvantages...the key is to picking something that highlights your stars and complements your role players, and allows everyone to be comfortable. The more comfortable your players are, the better they'll execute.

In defense, there are also many formations, depending on your player's talents. Its basically either a zone defense, in which you players don't matchup with a particular man but rather rely more on help defense and rotating...or its a man-to-man defense, in which each player grabs a man and sticks to him, and help defense only comes during penetration or when needed.

Really, once you have the fundamentals of basketball down, understanding the formations are the next step, and then you can take a look at some free basketball plays.
